Thank you for courage (always). You are one of my greatest inspirations. I love your language, your grace while shutting someone up and your beautiful presence. Thank you, Dr. Acosta. I am no longer on FB (writing hiatus), but please let us know here or via mail when your book is published. I need it. We all do. Con amor, Carolina. Diana, I especially relate to your comment about a historic church being renovated into a gym. I think it is an excellent example of what I'm getting at. No one is arguing that these new uses aren't useful or even interesting, but when spaces that have been iconic, culturally, for disenfranchised people are simply taken over for a new use, there is a significant loss that many people feel. The folks who come in often don't understand that, especially if they are of a different culture and especially if they have access to funds that allow them to do whatever they want, wherever they want. The change verges on outright destruction of a community if all the services which I mentioned are eliminated in the process. That said, in the case of First Spanish, there were people who could have prevented this from happening, but they trusted the wrong leadership, from what I've been told.

Regarding the last comment, I have no hatred for anyone. What I do have is a hyperbolic sense of humor that I use to highlight the ridiculous and profane, if only to keep myself from crying about constant injustices that are doled out to people of color. I, myself, am an artist. I'm a writer and I dabble in visual art and music. I love artists and I love all the crazy stuff artists do (myself included!), and as an educator I completely appreciate what artists contribute to every part of our everyday life. However, when artists come into spaces they know nothing about, or care to know nothing about, and just throw money around because they have a "vision," I'm not going to stop myself from pointing out that their so-called artistic sensitivity is probably lacking. And, jeez, gentrification, hipsters, and most-of-all Cirque du Soleil, beg for comedic response. If you don't know that, then I can't do much for ya. But I don't understand your hatred and insults for a community of artists. I find your first paragraph or so, rather unholy, and I am rather disturbed by your language and hatred towards this group of people. This is where I went to pre-school in the 80's, where my father left a life of alcoholism, and later became treasurer. It's where my mom was able to leave a factory job and become the pre-school administrator, where I had my first job in my team years at the pre-school, lastly where my son also went to pre-school. This church was more than building but a life source, where we found support and community. So sad this poser is getting away with this. My old grammar school has been bought by another school that has decided to turn the landmark St. James Church into a GYM. "For the community". I feel like I am in such a helpless minority when I see these beautiful, historic places of worship taken over.
